"questionable quality, but works well" 2009-03-06
By Gary W Turner (Houston, TX)
Questionable quality. I've had the gun just over a month and found it easy to use, lightweight, nice balance. I was fairly impressed. Then it just quit working, I'm guessing a seal ruptured somewhere inside b/c it just leaks instead of firing.

If I could get hold of someone at customer service I would find out what is wrong for sure, but they don't answer the phone, even during their limited office hours, and seemingly don't respond to their email. I'm sure it's still under warranty, but probably won't be by the time I finally get hold of someone.

UPDATE:

The leak was apparently the result of a seal getting dry on the shelf and coming unseated. It was a quick DIY fix. Since then, I've been using it regularly without any problems or complaints. I'd change the rating to a 4* if I could.

"Best staple caps you can buy." 2008-05-14
By HDS (Wheelersburg, OH)
After having used both Bostitch and Hitachi cap staplers I can say without a doubt that the Bostitch caps are the best. They work in Bostitch cap staplers without a problem, are easy to load, and are inexpensive. Not only do the Hitachi caps occasionally tear through, sometimes they do not release from the roll easily. The Bostitch caps never tear through and are individually stacked on the stick.

The biggest advantage I have found however, is that you can drop a stick in your nail pouch and pinch off individual caps to use with a standard staple gun. Many times you will find that your cap stapler will not fit where you want to place a staple, but a smaller staple gun will. This is especially handy when hanging insulation in tight spaces. By holding a cap in place when you staple, you can prevent the staple from tearing through the backing on the insulation. (Of course once the nose of the staple gun is on the cap, you want to move your finger before pulling the trigger.) The Bostitch caps will also work with brads. They are just made of tougher plastic than roll caps.

So the Bostitch caps are not only more versatile, but you will never have a staple tear through. While they are a little more expensive than roll caps, they are a better value overall. Especially if you need the retention of a staple cap when using a standard staple or brad gun.

If you own a Bostitch cap stapler then these caps are your only choice. If you don't own a cap stapler then you can use these caps individually with any staple gun. In any case they are the best staple caps you can buy.

If you are a "do-it-yourselfer" either by choice or because you are "on your own on this project", this is a great item to use along with the Bostitch cap stapler to apply roofing felt, or house wrap. My home was destroyed during the flooding here in Central Texas during the months of March through June, and this item has been a huge help to apply the house wrap and roofing felt. No more using one hand to hold the nail and cap, and the other hand to use the hammer. Simply follow the instructions on loading the caps into the cap stapler, and use the capler stapler as directed. Easy!!

 "I love this tool!" 2009-11-01
By Chuck (Texas)
Pros:

Great price

Light weight

Looks brand new

Works great

Cons:

Had to replace drain cock

Safety bumper came off gun after only a few uses

This is a great tool for a great price. I really could not tell that it was reconditioned. The only problem I had was the the drain cock on the bottom of the compressor did not work. So while looking at the new ones in the store, I noticed they had a ball valve instead of a twist-style valve. I ordered a Replacement ball value and now it works great. As it turns out, the old drain cock was not drilled through, so there was no way air was ever going to escape.

I have used this gun for putting up crown molding and small projects in the workshop. I have also used the air compressor to air up the tires on my vehicles, although the supplied attachment does not work the best.

Another thing I like about this compressor is the weight. It is easy for me tote around. I borrowed a friend's compressor before I bought this one and I had to use 2 hands to lug it around. This one I just grab and go.

I have received the product. It said refurbished. But I found every thing like new. And the compressor starts working as soon as I plug in. A little noisy compared to my other 2 cylinder compressor. But it is light weight and easy to carry around. I haven't used the nail gun yet. Recommended .... Good Buy for me.

"Good compressor and nailer, GREAT VALUE!" 2009-09-20
By evan in maine (maine)
Hi all,

I purchased this combo for the purposes that most homeowners will be using it for: inflating tires and pool toys, running a couple different nailers, blasting dust, maybe a small spray gun, etc. For these purposes and occasional use, it does really well. For regular use or high output tools, I'd suggest an oiled unit with larger capacity.

Anyway, lets start with the good:

The value cannot be beat. It came with everything mentioned and was delivered to my door for under $150. The nail gun seems to be of good quality, although it leaves the brad just barely above the surface of the wood. I like the included case. I think there's a depth adjustment, but I haven't played with it too much. It offers good power for general needs. The compressor is easy to move and doesn't cycle through too often when using the nailer or air gun. It is not deafening, but not exceptionally quiet. The accesory kit comes with everything you need to get started with the exception of the damaged hose.

The bad:

The freight company was incompetent, and I had to return several phone calls because they couldn't find my house. Expect delivery to take 14 days. The packaging was poor, and I think the couple blemishes were a product of this rather than the unit being refurbished. The air hose arrived cracked in half. I didn't return it because I was planning on buying a better hose anyway, but it sounds like they'd make you ship everything back if this happens, which is not acceptable. Just plan on spending an extra $25 on a good hose and save yourself the hassle of a cheap coil hose. I wish the regulator was not plastic because I feel that this will wear out quickly. The compressor is slightly larger than the porter cable equivalent. These were all minor gripes of mine.

For the money, as long as the unit doesn't burn out on me somewhere down the road, I am very satisfied.

"Somewhat better than bottom end portable compressors" 2009-09-18
By Scotsmanbully (Houston, TX USA)
I bought this compressor to keep my car and bike tires properly inflated. This is a marginal product and only slightly more convenient than a hand pump (bikes) and a service station (car). First, the attachment for inflating tires fits the hose very poorly and leaks air like crazy. This creates a problem when you're trying to inflate something as the compressed air resevoir is losing a lot of its pressure just due to the leakage. Also, this compressor will barely reach 100 psi and, due to the leakage, it will lose that pressure very quickly. That's not such a big deal for car tires that don't inflate to anywhere near that pressure, but it's a real pain in the neck for inflating bike tires. The only way I can inflate my 85 psi tires is to do it iteratively and even then I can just barely get up to 85 psi. Several of our bikes call for up to 100 psi and there is no way this compressor will inflate that high because the leakage runs down the pressure before the tire is inflated. Not only does the inflation attachment leak it's pretty poorly designed and doesn't fit over the inflation stem on a tire very well which further aggrevates the inflating process. Oh yes, the onboard pressure guage is about 20 psi inaccurate so you will want to use a separate guage to measure the psi of what you're inflating. The tool kit that comes with this is a sorry example of the worst of Chinese manufacturing; very low quality stuff. Finally, the cord is very short and you will most likely need an extension cord. I'm considering just buying a good bike hand pump and using this compressor for the car.

 "Inferior compressor" 2009-07-16
By K. Presnell (Austin, TX)
This is not a good quality compressor. I expect more from CH. The air feeder lines from piston are car fuel lines and not air hoses. The two feeder hosed rub against each other (due to poor design) because of vibration and will wear a hole in each other. I have had this compressor for 1 year and 2 months, used it 5 times and now the hoses have worn through and air leaks out. What a piece of crap. I spent 3 hours fixing this, cutting away crappy fittings, reinstalling air hose and clamping off. Do not buy this.

 "For my purposes" 2009-04-24
By D. Halbach (Leawood, KS, United States)
this has worked well. Use it around the house with my Ridgid brad nailer, haven't tried the included nailer. It's light, easy to carry around, even for those small jobs where you don't want to carry much. No problems. Loudness is in the ear of the beholder but I certainly don't expect quiet from a compressor so would say this is average in that regard. [...] So far so good would be my evaluation.

Customer Buzz
"It works, but I don't like this compressor." 2009-03-25
By Lucas Scharf (Urbana, IL)
I purchased this air compressor at a local big box store. I'm a homeowner and a woodworker, so I use this air compressor a couple of times a week. I'm not satisfied with it.

Here are the issues I encountered:

* The box implied that it could deliver 90 PSI. It can, but the unit it really designed to keep the pressure between 80PSI and 100PSI. When the pressure goes down to 80PSI, the motor starts and pumps the tank back up to 100PSI.

* I discovered after purchasing this unit that I like my bike tires at 100PSI so, after inflating each bike tire, I have to let air out of the compressor so that the compressor will run back up to 100PSI before inflating the next tire. Since I ride a bicycle regularly, this is not the air compressor for me.

* The brad-nailer / stapler included with this unit failed after 2-3 clips. My guess is that it was a problem in the safety mechanism, but I didn't investigate too deeply. Also, the easiest way to adjust the depth that the staples go to is to adjust the pressure regulator on the air compressor, and depth varies depending on the state of the compressor. I've been much happier with the Ridgid stapler that replaced it, since the Ridgid stapler drives the staples to a consistent depth, regardless of small variations in the air pressure (the included stapler isn't terribly consistent about the depth to which it drives staples).

* This compressor is really noisy. The little pump runs fast with a small cylinder, and it makes enough of a racket that I either put in earplugs before starting the compressor -- or plug it in and run to another part of the house while it pressurizes itself. It's almost as noisy as my table saw, and it takes its time coming up to pressure -- especially if you empty out the pressure-tank before storing it.

* It's easy to tip over, especially when inflating car tires.

That said, this device does work. It's also light enough to carry around easily with one hand. We built 40 feet of garden fence out of 1x2's using the Ridgid stapler this weekend, which means that we drove around 750 1-1/4" staples into cedar -- and this unit powered the whole thing, and it was able to keep up if we didn't staple continuously. I've also used it to run other small air tools, inflate car tires, and the other jobs that you'd expect to do with a small portable air-compressor around the house. But this unit drives me crazy with it's slow/noisy performance, and the quick breakage of the nailer/stapler makes me skeptical about its long-term reliability -- so I plan to replace it with more powerful compressor at the first opportunity.

"Eh, it's OK, but I returned it." 2009-01-31
By DJA (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
This thing is VERY loud if you're using it indoors and it takes FOREVER for the initial fill. The hose is cheap and the nailer/stapler jammed three times during the first use. I had to remove the faceplate to clear the last nail jam. On the plus side it is very light and portable. This will eventually compress two gallons of air and drive small nails and staples much of the time. It may also give you hearing damage. Since I didn't want the nailer and the noise was painful, back it went. I'm going to try another small unit from a different manufacturer.

"2-in-1 tools are rarely a good idea, this is no exception" 2009-11-18
By A. Berry
In addition to the other criticisms of this tool, the nose is assembled in such a way that clearing jams is a big pain. Three hex socket screws have to be removed and the nose safety, depth adjustment assembly, and nose safety/depth adjustment cover taken off before the nose plate can be removed to access the drive channel. Reassembly is not intuitive and rather fiddly. The nose plate is relatively thin such that it once the tip of the drive pin wears to a certain point staples slip between the drive pin and the nose plate, bending the latter outward which allows the staple to get mangled and the gun stuck to the work piece until you yank it off of the deformed staple.

Bottom line, you're much better off spending the extra money for a dedicated brad nailer and a dedicated narrow crown stapler. I've never met a 2-in-1 tool more complicated than a screwdriver that was a good idea, and this one, while far better than a combination wide crown stapler & corrugated nailer I had the misfortune to use once, is no exception.

"Nice dual purpose tool for most people." 2008-04-29
By Doug Pug (groton ,ma.)
I have used this gun on numerous projects. Shooting plywood veneer to the backside of cabinetry with staples gives great holding power. Also great for stapling carpet and padded fabrics to "home made" storage ottomans. I have used it on crown moldings with brads and this also works fine, BUT, if a clear finish is desired, you WILL get a "staple sized" divot ! AWESOME, only if you intend on painting your trim work ! ALWAYS TEST your dual purpose gun BEFORE you shoot in a visible area to see what your final result will be. All in all, this gun is great for the average user, but NOT for the SERIOUS cabinet maker where stain and lacquer will be used to finish, as ANY fastener must be concealed to let only the beauty of the wood to be seen... I have yet to experience any problems with the mechanics of this gun and it works very well for me. Once again, TEST FIRE, before you shoot in a visible area to be SAFE !!!

 "Just O.K." 2005-12-24
By Just a DYI GUY (Spring Hill, Kansas)
I got the 2 in 1 free when I purchased a Bostitch 15 gauge finish nailer. I haven't used it as a brad nailer, only as a stapler. I would have to say I am a bit disapointed. This gun rarely counter sinks into any materials I've tried it on. It leaves the staples flush with the surface or slightly protruding. The 2 in 1 one has never jammed on me, but I can't in good conscience recommend it either. If I had not gotten it for free I would have returned it for a dedicated finish stapler.

"Good to staple upholstery, and NOT for carpenters work" 2009-11-05
By Dan Tumens (Houston, TX)
I have used longest 9/16 staples, and they could not punch together 1/4 plywood and 1/2 MDF. The bearingly punched 1/4 plywood through, forget about the MDF.

I could use it or P301 for running staples around loose upholstery on your chair or sofa. BUT I would not use it for lumber work: wood, hardwood, plywood, or MDF. Too weak! Use compressor staplers instead.

 "just buy a $10 staple gun" 2009-09-12
By shukka7
This stapler/nailer barely performs for even the most remedial tasks.I would not suggest buying this item when there are much more affordable tools out there that out perform it.I bought the old style hand held staple gun,had zero problems and completed my project. As a stapler this thing works okay, but it wont drive brads through the thinnest of materials and bends half the nails it does drive.Nothing but a bad attempt at what is supposed to be a helpful tool, and I am a huge fan of Ryobi products.

 "Extremely Useful Tool" 2009-06-08
By James C. Yeary (Spring, TX. USA)
I've been purchasing Ryobi tools for five years now. They work long and hard and are financially a good decision because of their low cost investment and high productivity. This seller shipped quickly and my tool arrived and is already paying for itself. I'll buy again.

"Easily broken, Works as poorly as other non-pneumatic staplers" 2009-11-23
By Stephen Tashiro (Las Cruces, NM United States)
The Stanley TRE550 works as well (i.e. as poorly) as other manual and electric staple guns and brad drivers that I have used. A common characteristic of these tools is that you must hold the base absolutely flat against the work and press the tool down firmly as you staple, otherwise the staple is not driven all the way down. It is difficult to determine by sense of touch whether the base is flat against the work. You may swear that you have positioned the tool correctly, but when you examine its posture visually you find that you have the back of the base slightly off the work or have it tilted to one side. The TRE550 has a narrow base so the problem is worse with the TRE550 than with some other staplers. The work piece must be firmly supported. For example, if you are stapling into a board that is slightly crooked and it is not touching the work table directly under your staple, the staple may not go all the way in. As other reviewers have noted, if you want staples driven flush with the work (with this or other electric or manual staplers) you should have a hammer handy to finish the job.

Unlike similar Arrow brand staplers, the TRE550 has a safety mechanism that prevents the tool from firing unless the nose is in contact with the work. It will still fire when the magazine is empty of staples and this leaves a slight indentation. The TRE550 is not the stapler to buy if you want to do rapid fire stapling. The safety is useful if you are worried about accidentally pressing the trigger and shooting a staple through the air.

I have used electric and manual staplers to attach artists canvas to wooden stretchers made of poplar. The TRE550 works as well as the electric Arrow ETF50BPN, the Stanley Manual TR150HL and an old model Arrow manual stapler that I use. Out of 10 staples, you have to finish driving one or two of them with a hammer. All staplers that I have used jam occasionally. The jams are not hard to clear. You open the magazine and the mangled staple usually falls out of the tool. To avoid jams, don't use small groups of staples that have broken away from a chain of staples, as these chains come fresh from a box.

While doing work on a roof, I was stapling sheets of polyethylene as a temporary cover. The staples were being driven into several sheets of tar paper that covered the top of concrete. I accidentally drove one staple into an area where the tar paper had peeled off and the staple hit the concrete. This broke the stapler. The TRE550 stopped firing at all. When I shook it, I could hear a loose part sliding up and down. I took the tool apart. (This probably voids any warranty. One of the screws requires a security torx.) The loose part was the metal band that drives the staple. There is a spring with two long arms and one of the arms has popped out of a hole in the band. Putting the spring back fixed the loose part. However the TRE550 was still dead electrically. There is a small perfboard inside the tool with some electrical components. The driving mechanism consists of a coil of wire and a piston that slides up and down within it. My voltmeter showed that that the resistance of the coil was 1.2 Ohms, so it was not shorted. I could measure 120 V AC coming into the tool. (The problem was not that the saftey switch was left open. I put the tool back together to test it.) I conclude some of the electric components on the perfboad have gone bad.

Checking the Stanley website, there are no replacement parts listed for this tool. The electronic components on the perfboard do have standard markings and it looks like a simple circuit.

The TRE550 has a knob that turns to adjust the power of the tool. Like the adjustments on other electric or manual staplers that I have used, this adjustment doesn't do much. With the tool apart you find the knob controls how far the piston rises. The knob has a shaft with a wedged shaped end that acts like a simple cam. As you turn the knob the piston is allowed to rise more or less. A complete revolution of the knob brings the setting back to where it was.

I rate this tool as two stars out of five to indicate it is a somewhat below average electric stapler. This is due to its narrow base. It did break easily, but whether other electric staple guns might have broken under the same conditions, I cannot say.

 "Perhaps for small jobs..." 2009-11-17
By eyez wide open
But not for jobs requiring some fastening power. I used it for a few carpet jobs but still ended up using my hammer and screwdriver to fully bury the staples. My old Arrow T50m manual fastener drove staples more powerfully than this. This one is good to have around for lightweight jobs where you just want to bang some staples into fairly soft material with little effort, but thats about it. 2 stars for nice clean design with on/off switch for safety and being a handy tool.

"too weak to shoot brads" 2009-07-11
By Paul A. Mccloud
I bought the TRE550 to use installing crown molding around the soffitt on my front porch. The molding is soft 3/8" pine and the facia board is poplar. This unit is supposed to handle 1/2 and 5/8" brads but it could not set 5/8" brads without leaving them sticking up around 1/4". The last thing I wanted while working overhead was having to try to set all these little brads with a hammer and set punch. I have returned this unit to Lowes and ordered the "more powerful" TRE650 which is supposed to set up to 1 1/4" brads in most woods. I'm hoping it will at least handle 5/8" brads on the crown molding job.

"Works great if you press firmly" 2009-06-07
By C. Streit (Minneapolis)
I tested it using Arrow T50 5/16 inch staples in OAK wood. It would drive these staples flush to the surface if I put at least 10 lbs of pressure on stapler and had it level. Level being defined as the back of the stapler touching the wood too. If I lifted the back of the stapler off the wood it wouldn't drive the staple flush. Comparing this electric stapler to my manual heavy duty Arrow stapler, I would rate the driving ability the same.

I would suggest using two hands on the stapler to get good driving performace.

The Stanley TRE 550 electric is rated at 10amps. I tested power consumption with my kill a watt meter and found that it uses zero watts when plugged in and turned on. Each time I fired a staple the meter would jump to 22 watts and quickly return to zero. The power setting high vs low made no difference.

Unfortunately I don't have any longer staples or brads to test.

One sweet thing is that you can drive staples as fast as you can pull the trigger and move. I easily drove 10 staples in 10 sec. Fun, fun, fun. If you have a big project or a weak hand, electric is the way to go.

I paid about $25.
